We pray for the promotion.

We spend a lot of time praying for doors to open.

The business opportunity.

The relationship.

The platform.

The financial breakthrough.

The chance to finally do the thing we know we were created to do.

But lately, I’ve been thinking about a different question and I’ve had to ask even myself:

What if the opportunity you’ve been praying for arrived tomorrow? Would you be prepared to receive it?

It’s easy to pray for the opportunity.

It’s harder to prepare for it when there is no evidence that it’s coming.

That is where faith meets responsibility.

In Success Is In Your Reach, one of the principles I believe deeply is that success requires us to participate in our own progress. We can believe. We can pray. We can dream. But at some point, those prayers must be accompanied by preparation.

Because sometimes we are asking God to open doors that require a version of us we haven’t developed yet.

Preparation Is Part of the Prayer

I’ve learned throughout my life that opportunities often arrive before we feel completely ready.

A new leadership opportunity may require a skill you’ve never had to use at that level.

A bigger platform may require you to communicate differently.

A business opportunity may require systems you haven’t built.

The next level may require stronger boundaries, greater discipline, deeper faith, or a different mindset.

That’s why the season before the opportunity matters.

What are you doing while you’re waiting?

Are you learning?

Are you developing?

Are you building?

Are you becoming?

Or are you simply waiting for something to happen?

There is a difference between waiting and preparing.

Waiting says, “I’ll get ready when the opportunity comes.”

Preparation says, “I’m getting ready because I believe the opportunity is coming.”

That’s faith in action.

Don’t Despise the Preparation Season

Some of the most important work of our lives happens when nobody is watching.

There is no applause for studying.

No recognition for practicing.

No celebration for developing a skill before anyone knows you’ll need it.

But preparation isn’t glamorous.

It’s necessary.

Think about David. Long before he stood before Goliath, he had been developing courage and skill while tending sheep. The public victory was possible because of private preparation.

The giant revealed what the field had already developed.

That lesson has stayed with me.

Sometimes we’re praying for our “Goliath moment” without appreciating the field that’s preparing us for it.

Your current season may feel ordinary.

It may even feel frustrating.

But don’t underestimate what God may be developing in you right now.

Prepare Beyond the Résumé

Preparation isn’t only about credentials.

Sometimes the next opportunity requires emotional preparation.

Can you handle greater responsibility without losing your peace?

Sometimes it requires spiritual preparation.

Can you remain grounded when success brings more attention?

Sometimes it requires relational preparation.

Can you lead, collaborate, listen, and receive feedback?

Sometimes it requires character preparation.

Will your integrity remain intact when nobody can tell you what to do?

Success isn’t simply about getting the opportunity.

It’s about having the capacity to steward it well once it arrives.

Ask Yourself This

Instead of only asking:

“God, when is my opportunity coming?”

Try asking:

“God, who do I need to become to be ready for what I’m asking You to give me?”

That’s a different prayer.

Because sometimes the delay isn’t denial.

Sometimes it’s development.

What opportunity am I currently praying for?

If it arrived tomorrow, where would I feel least prepared?

What skill, habit, relationship, or mindset do I need to develop now?

Am I using my waiting season intentionally?
